TEC® Product Holds NWFA Award-Winning Project Together
A TEC® product helped flooring producer and installer Archetypal Imagery add to its already substantial trophy case at the annual National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) Wood Flooring Expo, which concluded April 30 in Charlotte, NC. Archetypal won the coveted Members’ Choice award – as well as the “Best Reclaimed” and “Best Residential” categories – for its “stunning mosaic floor” inside the “African Queen.” an extravagant safari-themed home in Springfield, Missouri.
Described by Hardwood Floors magazine as a “perennial favorite,” Archetypal is a nine-time “Wood Floor of the Year” award winner and has twice won the highest honor, the Members’ Choice award.
The highlight of the African Queen’s floor is a giant African crocodile, made up of 20,000 wooden tiles and spanning 17 feet. Avedis Duvenjian of Archetypal Imagery worked with artist Vartan Arutyunian, who incorporates 3-D artwork into floors, throughout the installation. Arutyunian drew and designed the crocodile, and the Archetypal Imagery team installed it using TEC® wood flooring adhesives.
TEC® adhesives were also used to install reclaimed wood flooring strips from 1750 in the home’s bedroom. The home’s floor was completed in the summer of 2015.
“I used TEC® wood adhesives because I needed a moisture-blocking, high-performing champion product that’s backed by a trusted company that I could rely on for this very intricate, high-end project,” said Duvenjian.
The 3,300-square-foot home features a taxidermic lion, chandeliers made of horns and tusks, a custom-cut shake roof from British Columbia, and front doors imported from Goa, India, taken out of a mausoleum in 1820. Visitors can sit at a wild boar and fallow deer chair made in Germany in the 1860s, or in a cheetah hide armchair.
The theme extends from floor to ceiling – literally. The dining area floor, designed and installed by Archetypal Imagery, is composed of 550,000 reclaimed ebony, oak, and walnut wooden squares.
The prestigious 2016 “Wood Floor of the Year” Awards presentation followed a thorough evaluation and selection process by a panel of NWFA-commissioned judges. The judges included trade and consumer editors, industry leaders and professional designers. Each year, a total of nine “Wood Floor of the Year” Awards are given to encourage and recognize innovative craftsmanship and design in wood flooring installations.
